Mercedes-Benz 230 SL “Pagoda” Fun Facts
The creation of Mercedes 230 SL in 1963 played a huge role in the future of Mercedes-Benz’s sports car program. It’s an important model in company’s portfolio, and here’s a few fun facts you may not know.
- Debut – The 230 SL model was unveiled to the world at the Geneva Motor Show, in March of 1963. At the time it was presented as comfortable and safe sports car of high-performance.
- Production years – As the first W-133 SL model, the 230 SL was manufactured from 1963 to 1967. More than 19,000 units were produced, with less than 5,000 sold in the US.
- Why “Pagoda”? – This model is also known as the “Pagoda” due to its unique concave shape of hardtop, resembling ancient Asian temples. Designed by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, this model’s roof of clear and distinctive lines pointed inward, which added extra strength, stability, and safety to the vehicle.
- Disc brake system – This was the first Mercedes model that had disc brakes (together with Master Vac servo break). However, the disc brake system was not manufactured in Germany, but in England and Wales by the company called Girling.
- Successors – It was succeeded by the 250 SL and 280 SL model that also kept the nickname “Pagoda”
Frequently Asked Questions
1. I’m a first-time seller. How do I prepare for the sale?
If you are uncertain of how to prepare for the first sale, here’s a few guidelines for you. Start by preparing all the paperwork, cleaning, or even better – detailing the vehicle. The next stage would be to set the correct asking price. For this, you have to research the market and see what similar cars are being sold for. This should give you an approximate idea on what the value of your Pagoda is.
After that, it’s time to take photos of the car, preferably in locations with clean background. Natural surroundings are best for this, so try to find a beach, country lane, or mountain road where you can take pics. Lastly, clear out the garage so that potential buyer can have clear view of the vehicle.
